Headship is a unique leadership role where the success of a whole school is deeply related to personal awareness, insight and effectiveness. One of the most important leadership roles in society, headship affects the flourishing and well-being of children, not just during their years of schooling but throughout their lives. The unique demands of the headteacher role require unique development, and this is why we offer this programme.

Overall the objective is to inspire, support, challenge and nurture you in taking up your current role with even more effectiveness, insight, authority and impact.

Design Principles:

  • We start with a profound respect for the experience, knowledge, skills and wisdom you bring with you.

  • We think that to develop the leader is to develop the human. There are no short cuts. If you want to develop your leadership it follows you want to evolve yourself as a human being.

  • This is a leader-led programme; you own your own enquiry. You are, so to speak, your own facilitator as well as the learner. Only you can sense the leader you are becoming and gauge its alignment with what you really want to become.

  • The programme participants’ work together will deepen learning and insight.


The programme is designed and facilitated by Alexander Pett. Alexander is a leadership development and organisational change specialist with 19 years’ experience of helping senior leaders to establish the leadership capabilities and behaviours necessary to underpin performance improvement. Previously Alexander was Director of Leadership and Talent for Kingfisher Group and before this was Head of Leadership and Talent Development for BT Global Services. He began his career as a secondary school teacher in Hampshire.

Training Objectives

Overall the objective is to inspire, support, challenge and nurture you in taking up your current role with even more effectiveness, insight, authority and impact. It will do this by:

  • Deepening self-awareness – a rigorous inquiry into ‘who you are and how you are’.

  • Developing your capability for growing colleagues’ leadership within a senior team and with middle leaders.

  • Increasing your ability to ‘read the room’ and influence group process and dynamics to create and sustain group and team high performance.

  • Building on your strength as a ‘system’ leader – the ability to influence and lead across multiple organisations and the school’s broader educational eco-system.
