Background on the Apprenticeship Levy
In April 2017, the government introduced the Apprenticeship Levy in an attempt to reform the way work-based learning is funded. The levy is paid by any organisation, private or public sector, with a salary bill exceeding £3m. The amount organisations pay is 0.5% of their whole staffing bill. The levy payments are ring-fenced and can only be accessed to buy professional learning products through an approved apprenticeship training provider (ATP).
Most schools have a pot of money that they can use for professional learning – including Academies and Maintained schools. As of April 2019, any unused levy money in this pot will be clawed back on a monthly basis by the Treasury.
Having followed the development of the Levy, OTSA has been working with the National College of Education (NCE) in order to utilise the money schools have been contributing.
